Balloon assisted esophageal foreign body retrieval

Esophageal foreign bodies (FB) require emergency treatment. Esophageal stricture formation and esophageal perforation become more likely the longer a FB is present in the esophagus. Endoscopy provides a non-invasive way of esophageal FB removal. Some FB are difficult to remove endoscopically. Occasionally, FBs are pushed into the stomach. There are times when this is not possible. In these cases, a balloon can be inflated caudally to the foreign body, then used to pull out the FB.
